A Wet Room Bathroom Meets a Growing Family’s Needs

When our clients purchased their dream home in Falls Church, Virginia, they knew they’d found the perfect location for their growing family.

The house had recently undergone an addition, which provided plenty of space for their needs. However, while new, the primary bathroom didn’t quite meet their expectations.

Referred by friends whose kitchen and primary bathroom we’d just remodeled, our Falls Church clients turned to Slate Design & Remodel to transform their primary bathroom to include a wet room— a true oasis tailored to their family’s needs.

The Vision: A Spacious Primary Bathroom Layout

Our clients had a clear vision for their primary bathroom remodel: A tranquil, spa-like retreat featuring a wet room design with a freestanding tub and shower.

They also wanted to incorporate his and her closets and a laundry room within the suite.

The challenge? Fitting all these elements into just 145 square feet of space.

Maximizing Space: An Innovative Primary Bathroom Layout

We had to think creatively to bring our clients’ wishlists to life within the limited space.

Because this area was part of the home’s recent addition, all electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems were up to code and in good working order.

We focused on optimizing the layout to include:

• Double vanity
• Wet room with freestanding tub & shower
• Toilet
• Laundry area
• Ample closet space

One of the fun challenges was finding space for a his and hers closet.

To solve this layout issue, we borrowed space from the adjacent secondary bedroom, divided its closet in half, and added sliding doors to create a second closet accessible from the primary bedroom.

Thoughtfully Designed Primary Bathroom Remodel

We successfully incorporated all of our client’s desired elements into their 145-square-foot primary bathroom through careful planning and ingenious design.

Wet Room
Including a large wet room in their bathroom design was a fantastic option, and the results are stunning.

The wet room design features:

• Large-format marble-look porcelain tiles
• Pottery barn freestanding tub
• Luxury shower system
• Ample bench space
• Single glass panel

Lighting
With just 145 square feet to work with and a single window positioned in the center of the bathroom wall, our team had to get creative to keep the space naturally well-lit and inviting.

The single glass panes separating the wet room’s shower area, bright finishes, and wall sconces help the space feel larger and more open.

Double Vanity

The floating walnut wood vanity with quartz countertops provides ample storage and makes the space feel more light and airy, giving it more depth.

Closet
The biggest challenge was finding space to create a his and hers closet to meet their needs. 

To solve this layout issue, we borrowed space from the adjacent secondary bedroom, divided its closet in half, and added sliding doors to create a second closet accessible from the primary bedroom. 

To maximize functionality, we installed pocket doors, including a full-length mirror cleverly integrated into one of the doors.

Laundry
The laundry room features a stacked washer and dryer, providing convenience without compromising space. This option meets all the family’s needs, from bathing to washing, in a beautifully designed space.
