Adam Smith – Founder’s Journey
Adam Smith’s journey in the construction industry began early, spending his summers on job sites starting at age 15 and transitioning to full-time work by 18. He began his career in the field, primarily on a framing crew, where he built a foundational understanding of construction from the ground up. Over time, he progressed into project management and later discovered a passion for design.
Throughout his 20s and early 30s, Adam worked with several local contractors in various roles, including designer and operations manager. These years provided him not only with deep industry experience but also an insider’s view of how different businesses functioned. A keen observer with an eye for improvement, he consistently sought customer feedback and looked for ways to enhance service quality and operational efficiency.
As the remodeling industry began integrating more technology, Adam became increasingly fascinated by the possibilities for innovation. He frequently proposed improvements to his employers, such as leveraging software tools and refining business systems. However, after encountering repeated resistance to change, he realized that in order to bring his vision to life, he would need to forge his own path.
In 2017, Adam founded Capital Design, now known as Slate Design & Remodel, with a mission to address the chronic issues plaguing the remodeling industry—namely, poor communication, inadequate planning, disorganization, and budget and schedule overruns. From day one, he focused on solving these problems with simple but powerful strategies: hiring the right people, adopting modern software solutions, and implementing well-defined systems and processes.
His goal wasn’t just to be another general contractor—it was to build a real, scalable business founded on integrity, excellence, and reliability. Adam assembled a team of industry experts, codified core company values, and instilled a clear vision: to deliver a level of service so exceptional that customers enthusiastically return and refer their friends and family.
Today, Slate Design & Remodel stands as a testament to that vision—combining hands-on expertise, operational precision, and a commitment to going above and beyond every single time.
